About The Program

Establishment: Visual Communication Design Master’s program with thesis started education in the 2018-2019 academic year within the Institute of Social Sciences.

Qualification Awarded: Graduates who successfully complete the program are awarded a MS (Master of Science) diploma in the field of “Visual Communication Design”.

Program Profile: The program can take place not only in the field of Visual Communication Design, but also carries out an education plan in all areas of communication, can make creative designs, which is required by the academic field and/or the business world, can pour theoretical knowledge into practice creatively and aesthetically, and follows the trends and innovations related to design and communication in the world, to train contemporary “communication designers” who care about ethical principles. Our program is a program that emerges from a combination of research, design, interaction, art, and technology.

Admission Requirements: The students about to apply our program are required to fulfill the general acceptance conditions (Article 4) stated in the Postgraduate Education and Training Regulation issued by the Interuniversity Board and the Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulation, which Hasan Kalyoncu University Institute of Social Sciences subject to (Resmi Gazete No. 29841 dated 28 September 2016). Students who will apply to the program must have a 4-year program from any undergraduate program related to the field of communication (Public Relations and Advertising, Public Relations and Publicity, Communication Sciences, Visual Communication Design, Radio TV Cinema and/or Cinema TV, Photography, Graphic Design, Communication Design, Communication Arts departments of Faculty of Communication, Fine Arts and Faculty of Art and Design). Students applying to the program out of the field will take two “Scientific Preparation” semesters (8 lessons). The courses in the Scientific Preparation program can be taken from the Visual Communication Design undergraduate program with the approval of the Department Head, the approval/request of the Head of the Visual Communication Design Department, and the approval of the Institute. Among the candidates who want to participate in the program, those who have obtained at least 55 points from ALES (in the last five years and in the type of EA / Sözel weighting score) will be evaluated. Foreign students must be successful from TÖMER. Candidates who have completed their undergraduate education abroad are required to obtain an equivalence certificate from YÖK. Candidates will be evaluated according to the Hasan Kalyoncu University Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulation and the relevant legislative provisions. In the evaluation, the candidate’s ALES score, undergraduate graduation grade, and the results of the oral interview to be examined by the jury of the Institute of Social Sciences are taken as the basis. While the candidates are evaluated, a total score is obtained by taking 50% of ALES, 30% of the undergraduate graduation grade, and 20% of the oral interview out of 100 full points.

In the Non-Thesis Master’s Program, ALES score is not required, candidates will likewise be evaluated according to the Hasan Kalyoncu University Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulation and the relevant legislative provisions. In the evaluation, the candidate’s undergraduate graduation grade and the results of the oral interview examined by the jury formed by the Social Sciences Institute are taken as the basis. While the candidates are evaluated; A total score is obtained by taking 40% of the undergraduate graduation grade, and 60% of the oral interview out of 100. As a result of the evaluation, the candidates are ranked starting from the candidate with the highest score within the quota and the candidates are accepted to the program as many as the announced quota.

Qualification Requirements and Rules: The education period of the program is 4 semesters. The program consists of a total of 21 local credits, 7 courses (1 compulsory, 6 elective), a seminar course, and a thesis study. The seminar course and thesis work are non-credit according to the local credit system and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. The total ECTS credits of the program is 120. In addition to the midterm and final exams of the student, learning activities such as reports, assignments, application studies, seminar presentations, and project studies can be used in the performance evaluation during the semester. In the last two semesters, students can start preparing their theses with their advisors who will be appointed by the recommendation of the Department and the decision of the Institute Board of Directors. The graduate student has to write the results of her/his
thesis in accordance with the Institute’s thesis writing rules and defend her/his thesis verbally before the jury. After the thesis defense is completed, the jury can decide on the thesis by absolute majority, acceptance, refusal, or correction. Those who successfully pass the Thesis Jury Defense are entitled to receive their diploma. The student whose thesis is decided to be corrected has to defend his thesis again in front of the same jury within three months at the latest.

In the Master without Thesis Program, the education period of the program is 3 semesters. The program consists of a total of 30 local credits, 10 elective courses, and a graduation project. The graduation project is non-credit according to the local credit system and is evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. The total ECTS credits of the program is 90. In addition to the student’s midterm and final exams, learning activities such as reports, assignments, application studies, seminar presentations, and project studies can be used in the performance evaluation in the semester. In the last semester, students can start preparing their graduation project with their advisors, who will be appointed by the recommendation of the Department and the decision of the Institute Administrative Board. The graduate student has to write the results obtained about the project in accordance with the project writing rules of the Institute. The student whose project is found successful by the advisor is entitled to receive his / her diploma.
